Now Offering Services for Exotic Pet Species at EVS Pet Urgent Care of Northbrook!

Updated: 2 days ago

We here at EVS Pet Urgent Care of Northbrook are so excited to be able to assist you with your exotic pet species in need of urgent care! This means we can see your small furries, birds, reptiles and amphibians!

Small Furries

The so-called “small furries” include rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, ferrets, prairie dogs, rats, hamsters, gerbils and mice. We commonly see rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas for GI stasis but we see all of the small furries for things like ear infections, respiratory infections, dental disease, bladder stones and infections, skin lumps such as abscesses and even arthritis pain in the older small furries.

Birds

We love to see all birds from large parrots to tiny finches to pigeons, chickens and ducks. Most frequently we see these guys for trauma, egg-binding, vomiting/regurgitation, diarrhea, and crop infections among other things.

Reptiles

We see reptiles for all sorts of issues including prolapses (cloacal, rectal, urinary, penile), trauma, poor appetite, ear infections, respiratory infections, eye infections, egg-binding, and metabolic bone disease.

Amphibians

Amphibians such as frogs are frequently seen for skin disease, trauma, prolapses, metabolic bone disease and other things.

Preventive Care & Husbandry

Because disease conditions in these guys are so commonly related to their husbandry (diet and other care at home), we will be sure to discuss with you how to optimize their care to prevent further trips to the urgent care (even though we’d love to see you).

Limitations & Emergency Referrals

However, it is important to mention that as an outpatient urgent care, we unfortunately are not equipped to hospitalize critically ill pets for things such as intravenous fluids or oxygen therapy. We also do not have anesthesia for invasive surgical procedures. Therefore, if you fear that your exotic pet has severe respiratory disease for which it might require oxygen therapy, or severe GI stasis that might require intravenous fluids, or if you have a very weak, debilitated bird for any reason, you should proceed directly to an emergency veterinary clinic. If you arrive at our clinic and we do not have the equipment to help your pet, we will certainly advise you where to go.
